Ask the Product Junkie: Clinique Repairwear

Sassy Gal said... I am DYING to try the new Clinique Repairwear Laser Focus Wrinkle and UV Damage Corrector? Not that we need it or anything, but just curious?

Oh, but I DO need it! Even though I've done several laser procedures at the cosmetic surgeon's office, I still have quite a bit of hyperpigmentation on my cheeks- it always seems to come right back. I'm guess I'm just very prone to it, even though I am very good about wearing sunscreen every day.

And I thought I remembered getting a few samples of this from Sephora, so I went back through my sample stash and found two .5 oz samples, the equivalent of a full-sized bottle. So I'll be testing this out in the evenings over the next few weeks and will report back with a full review. At $44.50 for an ounce, it's pretty pricey, but since I scored some samples, I'm game to give it a try.

Here's the product description from Clinique's website: Potent serum gives every skin a second chance against lines, wrinkles, sun damage. In 4 weeks, see obvious reduction in lines, wrinkles, improved texture. At 12 weeks, the visible wrinkle-reducing power is remarkably close to a dermatological laser procedure. 63%, to be exact. Different commitment, different results. And yet impressive results guaranteed.

Anybody try this already? Let us know in the comments.

Ask the Product Junkie.... Mani Tips

Jillian Inc. says: Totally agree with Mr. - that you could make a career. This isn't so much about a particular product but, in your opinion, what is the KEY to a good at home manicure? (base, top coat, etc?). How do you do yours? I really need to do mine myself but they always turn out looking like crap. Thanks!

Great question Jillian! I've been painting my nails since middle school, and through the years, I've found there ARE a few things that make a difference. I have a post here when I discuss the products I use and the order in I use them in. However, I think two of the steps are by far the most important so let's discuss them here.

1. Cuticle care. My mother was strangely incessant about pushing my cuticles back when I was growing up. Every morning she'd use a pencil eraser to ease them back. Although I hated doing it at the time, my mother was on to something: Taking care of your cuticles equals less problematic nails. Less splits, tears, and breaks.

Although I don't push my cuticles back with an eraser anymore, I do two things in particular to take care of my cuticles. First, a few times a week, before I apply fresh polish, I use a product like Sally Hansen Instant Cuticle Remover. This softens the cuticles and allows them to be pushed back off the nail very easily. Having your cuticles pushed back allows a better, longer lasting application of nail polish.

Second, I use a cuticle cream with AHA at least once a day to keep them moisturized and maintained. Poshe Cuticle Care and CND Cuticle Eraser are two good ones.

2. Top Coat. A quick dry top coat will change your life! My potion of choice is Seche Vite, but there are quite a few different ones you can try- from what I read, based on body chemistry, some people have better luck with other choices. Others to try are Poshe, Out the Door, Sally Hansen Insta-Dri..... there are quite a few out there- you'll just need to figure out what works best for you. Most quick dry top coats need to be applied immediately after the last coat of polish is applied.

I usually start my mani about 9 and am done by 9:30 and go to bed at 10 and have perfect nails when I wake up.

Hope these tips helps Jillian!

The Product Junkie Says....

Liz asks..... i have to know what color of creamy, nudey lipstick those kardashian gals wear. i loooove it! i don't think this fair skinned white girl can pull it off but if you hear anything, let a girl know!

Liz, I admit I was super afraid to use the words "Kim Kardashian" and "nude" in the same google search.... but just for you, I did some Nancy Drew-ing and came up with this answer.

Kim usually lightly applies MAC Lipliner in Stripdown ($13), then tops MAC Lipstick in Angel ($14.50) with NARS Lip Gloss in Turkish Delight ($24). For a very nude, matte lip, Kim wears Nars Lipstick in Belle De Jour ($24) paired with MAC Lipliner in Subculture ($13).

Ask the Product Junkie

It's been a while since we've done this.... have a question for me? Are you wondering about any new products you've seen? Makeup questions? We're talking food, cleaning products, candy, beauty products, clothes, anything.

Cause here's the deal: If it's new, on an endcap, or there's a coupon for it, I've probably bought it. And believe me, I've got opinions. Mr. Sasha is convinced there's a career out there for me in product review, but I'm not so sure. I'm a little like Rosie Perez's character on White Men Can't Jump, I know a little bit about a lot of stuff.

Anyway, leave me a comment with your question and I'll post some answers later today!

Review: Clean & Clear Pore Perfecting Moisturizer

This photo was taken in the car.... right before I returned this product to CVS. So nice that they have such a good guarantee on their health/beauty items, because I was allergic to this product.
I thought it would be a great product- an oil free moisturizer with SPF that acts as a primer. And I figured if it was by Clearn & Clear, it certainly wouldn't break me out.

And it seemed fine in the morning. My makeup went on nicely. I was shine free at lunch. But by mid-afternoon, it was getting warmer outside (and in my office, sucky A/C), and I started itching. Very bad. I need to take a look at the ingredients, because the itching was similar to the effect that Bare Minerals has on me, and I've been told that it could be bismuth.

So this was a no-go. What moisturizer with SPF are you using right now? I'm testing out one from Kate Sommerville and so far so good- more on that later.

Ask the Product Junkie: Non-Feathering Lip Color

Blanda Amania writes: I'm loving and appreciating your makeup tips and product reviews. One thing I'm having a problem with being older, and sun OVERexposed, is dry skin around my lips, which encourages my lipstick to feather-- just hate it. Have you encountered this problem, and if so, what products/application techniques have you found to combat it? I kid you not. At 10am everyday I'm checking the reflection and cursing it all.

Thanks Blanda! Feathering lipcolor is the thorn in my side too- it's always been a problem for me as well. Now, I attribute mine to smoking back in HS and college, but I was also sun OVERexposed like you.

What I have found is that I just can't wear a typical lipstick. And lipliner is no help. I've tried it all- the "outliner" that is supposed to keep your lipstick from running (ha!) and of course colored liner to match your lipstick. I still get feathering.

It's pretty much got to be labeled as a long-wearing lipcolor, or it's got to be a stain.

So I stick with Revlon Colorstay Overtime Sheer Lipcolor in Sheer Pomegranate or I use a stain with a clear sparkly gloss over it- I like The Balm Stainiac in Beauty Queen with Bare Esentuals Buxom Lips in Dominique over it. I also have found that Revlon's ColorStay Mineral Lip Glaze in Overtime Wine doesn't run that bad... actually one of the first glosses that wears OK for me (but it is mysteriously missing from the Revlon site).

Other products I like: Revlon Colorstay Overtime Lipcolor (a bit darker than the sheer version), Too Faced Mood Swing (a color changing gloss that doesn't seem to run) and Avon's Pro-To-Go Lipstick (order from my friend Valeri!) in Cherry Glisten (a highly pigmented lipbalm that doesn't seem to run).

Anyway, I feel your pain! If your coloring is way different than mine, let me know what shades you are looking for and I'll see if I have any ideas!

Self Tanner Update

Did you get around to trying Loreal's Sublime Glow in medium as I recommended?

So far, it's endorsed by me, my neighbor Crystal, Beauty Addict (she's got a fabulous post on self-tanner smell), and Laura!

Laura writes: ......but I just finished up my Jergens and bought some Loreal Sublime Glow (Medium) and OMG - It's so much better than the Jergens! At Target is was actually a bit cheaper too ($6.49 vs $6.99) I really like that it's got little sparkly things in it that reflect the light. Hey, any help we can get, right? Anyway, I'm definitely a convert! If they only had it for the face - I'd be happy! It smells so much better than the Jergens I'm using on my face (which smells like peepee). Thanks Sasha!

So who else has tried it and what did you think?

Ask the Product Junkie: Brown Lipstain

Stephanie asks: Any ideas for lipstains? I tried Lip Envy at Sephora. It was 15 or 16 dollars and the only stain they had that wasn't pink. (I am looking for something brown or at least natural lip color-no pink!) It is not good at all!!!!! It doesn't stain anything! It comes right off and is chunky when it wears off and mixes with the gloss I wear over it. Ahhhh!

Stephanie, I agree that Lip Envy is not a good product- I was not impressed with it at all. Did you know Sephora has a great return policy?

Anyway, I saw a friend from college this weekend (Hi Heather!) and of course I asked her what lipcolor she was wearing. Her coloring just happens to be similar to yours.

Turns out she wears Revlon Colorstay Overtime Lipcolor in True Chocolate. Fabulous brown color. This is a two step product with a stain/longwearing lipcolor on one end and a top coat on the other.

I love love love this product (two of my HG lippies are Overtime Lipcolor Sheer in Sheer Pomegranate and the Overtime Lipcolor in Perpetual Plum) and think you would like it too. You can apply the topcoat as much as you like and it's doesn't ball up the lipcolor.

Concealer Answers for Laura

I knew the only person who loves makeup more than me would have some ideas for Laura!

Thanks Traci Anne! Love ya!

Ask the Product Junkie: Concealer

Laura writes: Sasha, I read your blog daily. I’m Laura and you link to mine (Our Crazy Wonderful Life) on yours. Anyway, I’ve got a product question for you. I have dark under-eye circles that I can not get rid of. I use Bare Minerals for my makeup and love it. I also started using the Neutrogena eye makeup remover after you suggested it and I really like it a lot. For under my eyes, I’ve tried the yellow-tinted powders, lighter foundation under my eyes, coverup (which I can’t stand – I’m a powder girl) everything – but nothing works. What’s a girl to do?Help?

Laura, first of all, I've seen a pic of you on your blog, and I see no dark circles! You are gorgeous! But if you insist that this is a problem for you, I may have an idea that you haven't tried.

Have you tried applying your minerals wet? I have heard of ladies using water or, get this, Milk of Magnesia, to make a paste with their minerals and applying that with a concealer brush. Let that dry before you apply your foundation dry with your normal foundation brush. I believe they were just using their regular foundation color for this method.

Let me know what you think. If this isn't a road you want to go down, I have another makeup crazy friend who might know..... Traci Anne, any other ideas?

Ask the Product Junkie: Self-Tanners, Take 2

Well, ladies, I've found two HG self-tanners! (and they are still on the market!!!!)

First is Neutrogena's Sun Fresh in Fair/Medium ($10 for 4 oz). Oh, what a find!

Scent: Billed as "grapefruit/nectarine", which I'm not so sure about, but I will tell you it's not at all like some of the other tanners I've used. Leaves a very faint tanner smell, so faint you'll be the only one to notice, and that's only if you sniff your own arm.

Color: Fab!!! Perfect for me- I'm very yellow and this looks so natural on me.

Texture and drying time: No complaints here- in fact, it dries very fast and is very smooth-able. I loved putting it on.

Con: The fact that you only get 4 oz for $10 bucks is definitely a draw back. I could see myself going through this tube very fast.

My most recent find is probably the best deal, bargain-wise. It's Loreal's Sublime Glow in Medium ($10 for 8 0z).

Scent: Just as good as the Sun Fresh above.

Color: A bit more brown than the Sun Fresh, but still a great color for me. As a bonus, there's a slight shimmery to this lotion. Now, it's not a "I'm going to the Prom in 1992" kind of shimmer, it's very pretty and really, you'll probably be only one who notices. But I like it.

Texture and drying time: Doesn't dry as fast as the Sun Fresh, but still dries nicely and isn't sticky once it's dried.

Verdict: I'll be using both- probably alternating.

Application tips: I start by applying a plain, unscented lotion (I use Cetaphil Lotion in the pump)to my elbows, knees, ankles, and tops of my feet. This keeps the color from grabbing too much in those areas. Then I slop the tanner on, starting with my arms and chest. I move down and do my lower legs and feet next, and then my thighs. I don't worry too much about my back and stomach. Who sees that anyway?

Two other tips: After I've done my arms, I get another squirt of Cetaphil lotion and rub it on the undersides of my arm and in the crook of my elbows- kind of to dilute the tanning lotion and blend it in there.

I also wash my hands when I'm done, and use a round cosmetic sponge to apply a drop of the lotion to the top of each hand.

Let me know if you try these and what you think!

Ask the Product Junkie: Eye Makeup Remover

Slim asked me the other day about eye makeup remover- she said she wasn't sure that she liked the Too Faced Lash Injection mascara because she was having trouble getting it off at the end of the day.

Turns out, she was using a different remover than me. I have been using the oil-free shake-up removers and they work great. Now, note that I also use a cotton round rather than a ball. Never had good luck with cotton balls.

Laurie (a Mary Kay consultant) left a comment a few weeks ago about her favorite remover, and I agree that it's a great product. I especially like that their bottle has a small opening that allows you to squeeze out just the amount you need rather than the wide opening that most of these type of removers have.
Now, the bargain shopper in me also needs to tell you about a cheaper version that I also like. You can typically find Neutrogena's version packed with two bottles together and sometimes you can even pair this find with a ECB deal at CVS- in fact, this week if you spend $15 on Neutrogena skin care, you get $5 ECB. Although it has the wider opening, I still like this product, especially at the price.

Anyway, using this type of remover will remove the fiber mascaras very well. Now, remember they come off differently. Your cotton round won't have black smeary stuff all over it, and you won't get black smear under your eyes. Instead, these mascaras come off in clumps- little balls of product. It's a much cleaner removal process that I just love.

Ask the Product Junkie: Hershey's Bliss

Ash asks: I keep seeing these commercials for Hershey's Bliss. Have you tried them? You are the snack food/candy guru as well. Let us know if they are worth the $ :)

Ash, you are in luck! (And you can call me Sash, by the way!) CVS has them on special this week (2 bags for $4 after ECB) so I picked up a bag of the Milk Chocolate, and also the Milk Chocolate with a Meltaway Center on Sunday when I was doing the Huggies diaper deal.

Now, typically, I'm not a Hershey chocolate fan. I don't particularly care for their plain chocolate bar, and don't like their plain chocolate kisses. The chocolate just tastes "off" to me. However, I do like some of their specialty products, so I was glad to try these, all in the name of product review of course.

Simply put, love them! They melt fabulously in your mouth, if you can keep from biting into them, and they leave a wonderful taste behind. So go for it, Ash, I really think you'll like them!

Ask the Product Junkie: Tinted Moisturizer

sweet-seventeen writes: Oh, it would be so awesome if you could recommend a good tinted moisturizer. My skin tends to be sensitive, especially to new products on it, and I have no clue which ones are the best and which ones will make me break out or get shiny. (If it helps, I'm PDP, too. lol.) Thank you!

You betcha.

One of my long-time faves (probably 15 years!) has been Clinique's Almost Makeup ($19.50). Sheer, lightweight, non-oily, this is pretty fabulous. I have relatively sensitive skin, and never experienced breakouts or extra oil while using this product.

It even has an SPF of 15.

I have always purchased the Light, which used to be the lightest shade- but it looks like they have even more colors available now so I'd probably stop by a counter and see what shade works best before I purchase again. If you can time your purchase with a GWP (gift with purchase), even better!

Application is super easy- I typically use a damp sponge. However, I have recently been using a damp foundation brush and like that as well and it seems more sanitary.

Another tinted moisturizer I recently discovered is Stila's Illuminating Tinted Moisturizer ($32). It's become my weekend staple and I love love love this product. It's perfect for the PDP!
Even better, it's available as part of the above Best of Stila Set, which is a $120.50 value for only $40 at Ulta. For just $8 more, you get five more products! Well worth it.

Ask the Product Junkie: Eye Makeup

Shannie writes: Please tell me about non-smudging eye makeup. I don't care what I buy, it smudges and I look like a raccoon by the end of the day. Please help!

Oh Shannie, this ties in perfectly with the Too Faced eye makeup review I've been meaning to do for almost 2 weeks! Thanks for kicking me in the ass and making me get it done!

I went along with Slim to Ulta a few weeks ago to watch her get a Too Faced makeover by a Too Faced makeup artist. It was fab! I intently watched every move the artist made, asked a million questions about her techniques and even what makeup she was personally wearing, and probably convinced her that I was a freak. Or maybe not, because she did offer to do a touch-up on me since I wasn't bare-faced. Fun!

One product I was particularly interested was the eye shadow primer, something I haven't used since the old days when I used Clinique's Touch Base, which I stopped using because I hated using my finger to apply it. Recently, I've heard a lot about Urban Decay's Primer Potion (called UDPP by beauty bloggers), but I've also read a lot about how their delivery sucks and leaves a lot of product unreachable in the tube.

But I am in love with Too Faced's Shadow Insurance ($17)! Much better application system. The makeup artist said to squeeze a small amount on a concealer brush and apply all over your lid up to your brow. It's amazing how much better my eye shadow wears when I use this. I am wearing eye shadows I never wore before because I could never get a good application from them. Now I know the secret.....

Next, she showed me Too Faced's Liquif-Eye ($17.50). What a fab product! This turns any eye shadow into an eyeliner that lasts all day! So now I'm always able to have a coordinating eye liner to go with my chosen shadow. Now, I was a liquid eyeliner virgin, but this is relatively fool-proof if you go slowly. The result is a just more intense version of the eye shadow you choose. You'll love it.
I'm always on the make for that perfect mascara. Here's my wish list of mascara qualifications:
  • doesn't run or smudge throughout the day, even when I exercise
  • thickens
  • lengthens dramatically
  • is easy to take off
I thought I'd found my HG mascara a few months ago when I discovered Fiberwig ($22). Fiberwig met all my qualifications except it didn't do much to thicken.

However, Lash Injection ($19.50) does! Magnificently!

Note that removing the fiber mascaras is a little different and takes a little getting used to. When you remove them, your cotton ball doesn't get all black and smeary. The mascara comes off in little tubes, almost solidly. Fiberwig's marketing includes the slogan "No more panda eyes" and that goes for Lash Injection, my absolutely most favorite mascara ever. Seriously.

So have fun shopping!

Ask the Product Junkie: Self Tanners

Clemsongirl asks: How about the self tanner dealies at BBW? Thoughts?

Courtney writes: ooh! I'd like a review on your favorite self tanner please!

First and foremost, you should know I love to be tan. I spent so many years trying to get (and usually achieving) that savage tan. I always feel prettier with a tan. But alas, we now know that it's bad for your skin...... So a few years back I decided no more outside or bed tanning for me.

I was always freaked out by self-tanning lotions because of all the orange results I'd seen on others so I stayed away.

So when Jergens first came out with their gradual tanner in 2004, I rushed to try it. I was not impressed. The smell was off-putting and I could not get even color, especially on my legs. So I gave up for a little while.

Next I tried Dove's version. A little better, but still not something I enjoyed using.

Now, one of my favorite beauty bloggers is Beauty Addict. Last summer she did a feature called Fake Bake Month and I discovered St. Ives Healthy Brilliance Renew & Glow.

Oh, what a much better smell! The color was great for me and it actually was a terrific body lotion as a bonus. Easy to spread, dries fast, develops into a nice light tan after a few days. I found it at Target and it was reasonably priced at around $7. I was sold.

Of course, you'll never get identical results to an actual outdoor tan, and my results were nowhere near as dark as the savage tan I was used to getting..... but this is probably the next best thing. Check out Beauty Addict and give some of her suggestions a try!

Edited to add: Well, damn. It looks like it may have been discontinued. I haven't bought it since last summer..... I am very disappointed! Maybe it's still in some stores, though. Be on the lookout.

I guess it's back to Beauty Addict's reviews and I'll try to find something similar.

Taking Submissions: Ask the Product Junkie

Anyway, leave me a comment with your question and I'll post some answers later today!

Also, can anyone think of a better name for the feature besides Ask the Product Junkie? Creativeness is my downfall.
