Release Day Review: Brooklynaire by Sarina Bowen

by Sarina Bowen
Release Day: February 12, 2018

A sexy new standalone from USA Today bestseller Sarina Bowen.

You’d think a billion dollars, a professional hockey team and a six-bedroom mansion on the Promenade would satisfy a guy. You’d be wrong.

For seven years Rebecca has brightened my office with her wit and her smile. She manages both my hockey team and my sanity. I don’t know when I started waking in the night, craving her. All I know is that one whiff of her perfume ruins my concentration. And her laugh makes me hard.

When Rebecca gets hurt, I step in to help. It’s what friends do. But what friends don’t do is rip off each others’ clothes for a single, wild night together.

Now she’s avoiding me. She says we’re too different, and it can never happen again. So why can’t we keep our hands off each other?

I loved this fresh new twist on the billionaire storyline and the absolutely dreamy hero. Nate is everything I could ever want in a book boyfriend - he's smart, confident, and completely smitten! Brooklynaire is sexy and addictive! #1 NYT Bestseller Lauren Blakely

My review: 5 swoony stars!
Along with score of fans of Sarina Bowen, I have been waiting on pins and needles for Nate and Beeca's story. Although not officially part of  Brooklyn Bruisers series, Brooklynaire sort of runs adjacent to the Brooklyn Bruisers series and fills in some timeline gaps for us. And we get to see some of our favorites hockey players and team employees. Such a treat!

But back to Brooklynaire, I swooned through pretty much the whole thing. Sigh.... Who knew Nate could draw me in so fast? I love this twist on the billionaire storyline (trust me, Nate is NOT your typical rich guy and this is really not a billionaire book), because it's really more of a friends to lovers book than anything else. Yes, they work together, actually Becca works for Nate, but their friendship and history goes so deep, that's the part that's important. These two together are PERFECT- just meant to be together.

Bowen's humor game is strong (So. Cat tacos?) and can write a steamy scene like nobody's business. I devoured Brooklynaire and found it to be a delight and so satisfying. A must read!

Excerpt:

I grab a towel off a waiting stack of them and toss it onto the edge. “You can sit and put your feet in.”
She’s wearing a short little knit dress that’s been making me crazy all evening, so it would be easy enough for her to strip off those stockings, sit on the towel, and drop both feet in.
And that’s what she does. She eases one stocking down over a smooth knee and tugs it off.
I don’t want to stand there staring like a middle-school boy. Okay, I do want to. But I don’t want to make her uncomfortable. So I go over to the sound system instead, and I set my phone on the speaker and cue up a really old playlist. One she’ll recognize.
When I turn around again, she’s seated on the towel, both legs hanging down into the churning water. “Ah. Wow.” She looks up at me, her eyes sparkling. “Nice place you got here.”
Isn’t it?” I toe off my shoes and kick them to the side.
The first song comes on, and it’s a Macklemore tune that we used to play far too often in our first office. Rebecca laughs immediately. “You didn’t! I haven’t heard this playlist in forever. But I’ll bet I still know every transition. Lady Gaga is next.”
“She sure is.”
Rebecca kicks her feet, making a splash. “I have a little confession to make.”
“What’s that?” I loosen my tie and slide the knot out.
“Well…” She grins up at me. “I used to have a crush on you. Back in the early days.”
My hands freeze on the tie silk. “Get out of town. You did not.”
“No, I really did.” Her cheeks are pink. “That first year especially. But you were taken, and you were my boss. Those two things made it pretty easy to tamp down, when you’re a practical girl like me.”
I walk over and drop down beside her, my back to the water, though, because I’m still wearing trousers and socks. “So how does that work, exactly?”
“What?” She gives me a sidelong glance, but then looks away again and won’t meet my eyes.
“How do you stop wanting someone? I’m a practical person, but I don’t see how that makes it any easier. Nothing seems to mute the raging attraction I have for you.”
Her chin turns quickly toward me, and I seize the opportunity to kiss her. And it only takes one kiss—one slide of my lips over hers, and I’m on fire again.
We’re facing opposite directions, so it’s awkward as hell. But I don’t even care. I take greedy sip after greedy sip of her mouth, until she pulls back to stare at me. Her color is high and her eyes are bright and happy. “This is like Twister.”
“It’s better,” I correct. Lady Gaga comes on, just as Becca said she would. “Are we getting into this pool or what?”
Becca kicks a foot in the water. “I’m tempted. But I don’t have a bathing suit.”
“Oh, snap.”
She smiles and shakes her head. “Are you really getting in?”
“We don’t have to.” I’m never going to pressure her.
Her fingers trail across the surface of the bubbling water. “But this is an adventure, right?”
“Right.” I stand up and remove my socks. She’s watching me. And I can’t read her expression. “What?”
“Just wondering what else you’re going to take off.” She smiles.
“Come here.” The order rolls off my tongue.
But Rebecca doesn’t blink. She gets up and turns toward me, curiosity in her eyes.
“You tell me. What am I taking off?”
She puts two hands tentatively on my chest, and I make myself be patient. Everything I ever wanted is on the other side of this moment. I just need us to break through this awkwardness—the “will we or won’t we” tension.
Her fingers find the top button of my shirt. “I’m not getting in the water unless you are.”
That’s a compromise I can live with. I find my lower shirt buttons and work upwards, until we meet in the middle. She pushes the two halves of my shirt apart and runs a hand down my bare chest.

My inner caveman stands up and cheers.

Blurb

They’re not quite enemies. Not really friends. More like frustrated balls of sexual tension and neither will give in.

Lance Gibson drives Mariah Malarkey absolutely crazy. He uses her office like a phone booth, takes cupcakes from the corner of her desk like she baked them just for him. She didn’t. Maybe she knew the history teacher happened to love peanut butter icing, but that was purely a coincidence. All sixteen times.

Mariah has a way of getting under Lance’s skin too. She calls him out on his crap, spoils him even if inadvertently, and seeing the librarian in skirts drives him wild. She won’t give in. It’s for the best, really, considering there’s no way he could lie to a woman like that and he’s not about to tell her the truth about himself. Not in a million years.

These two don’t hate each other. They don’t really like each other. But for this to be a friends-to-lovers story, they have to start somewhere, right?

Note: This can be read as a standalone novel.

Love and the right timing were two things I didn't believe in.

Love is about walking to the edge of the cliff and taking the leap together. Timing was never on our side. My first mistake was hooking up with my best friend. My second came years later, when we met again, and I fell for her. My third was letting her go, because I had to. Because a love like this wasn't built to withstand the winds coming in our direction.

Love and timing. I didn't believe in either.

BLURB:
I don’t know what love is anymore.

Well, that’s not entirely true, but I’m going to tell you a little secret: I’ve lost the spark.

You know the kind of spark I’m talking about?

Where butterflies take flight in your stomach from two hands innocently colliding. Or catching your breath when you first meet someone attractive. Yeah, that spark.

Except I haven't felt that feeling in forever; there is nothing left inside of me.

Normally, this wouldn’t be a problem--but I’m a writer on a serious deadline, and my editor is breathing down my neck for a romantic, Nicholas Sparks type love story. No pressure, right?

That's how I find myself flying across the country to crash a wedding in the name of research, dress and heels stuffed into my small suitcase.

It should be the easiest book research ever. Drinking some free champagne, basking in the love of two strangers, and tapping into my romantic side. That will be a breeze. I'm a pro. I can handle this.

Until I mistakenly end up in the wrong hotel room, naked as the day I was born, with the sexiest human I have ever met staring me down, wondering what I'm doing taking a shower in his bathroom. I don't think calling it research will get me out of this pickle.

But it will make for one hell of a story....

About the Author:

Author, wife, adoptive mother, and peanut butter lover. Will dance for laughs, won’t eat anything spicy because you asked, but will squeeze boobs in replace of a hug. Grew up in Southern California (Temecula, anyone? Anyone?) lived in New York (the armpit of NY, not the city) and now resides in Colorado with my wife, son, two dogs, three cats, and my multiple book boyfriends. Loves love, anything romantic, and will die if I ever meet Tom Hanks. Yay, books!

Review: Secrets at Seaside by Addison Cole (Sweet with Heat: Seaside Summers Book 5)

by Addison Cole
Publication Date: October 25, 2017
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Sweet Romance

Sweet with Heat: Seaside Summers features a group of fun, flirty, and emotional friends who gather each summer at their Cape Cod cottages. They're sassy, flawed, and so easy to relate to, you'll be begging to enter their circle of friends!

Secrets at Seaside by Addison Cole is the sweet edition of New York Times bestselling author Melissa Foster's steamy romance novel Seaside Secrets. The story conveys all of the passion you expect between two people in love, without any explicit scenes or harsh language.

In SECRETS at SEASIDE...
Tony Black is the hottest surfer on the planet. He travels the world throughout the year and spends his summers on Cape Cod with his friends, at the Seaside cottages in Wellfleet, Massachusetts. He's got his choice of women, but Amy Maples is the one he wants. Fourteen years ago she was his for an entire summer, until a devastating accident changed everything, and what they had seemed like it had never existed--at least for her.

Amy Maples is as consistent as the day is long. She's spent summers on Cape Cod forever, she always does the right thing, and she's spent years trying to reclaim the heart of Tony Black, the only man she's ever loved. She's back for a summer of fun with her friends at Seaside, only this year she's been offered the opportunity of a lifetime thousands of miles away, and she's decided to try one last time to reconnect with Tony. But having a relationship with Tony means dealing with her past--and dealing with her past may knock her to her knees.

My review: 4.25 stars
After reading and enjoying the first four books in the series, I was dying to know more about Amy and Tony! Secrets at Seaside totally sideswiped me- I had no idea they had such a backstory! I'd categorize this as second-chance and friend-to-lovers too. I thought the author wrote their pain and loss so well. Each story in this series is so different, yet all the characters are well developed and feel genuine. I love catching up with characters from past books as the series continues. I can definitely recommend this "sweet" series- it has just the right amount of suggestive heat without being too explicit. Looking forward to the next book in the series!

Audiobook Review: Drumline by Stacy Kestwick

Drumline

Author: Stacy Kestwick
Narrators: Stephen Dexter, Tracy Marks
Length: 9 hours 5 minutes
Publisher: Stacy Kestwick
Released: Dec. 4, 2017
Genre: Contemporary Romance

Traditions are important. Especially in the South. College football. Rivalries. Tailgating. Halftime shows. Some things just don’t change. Until Reese Holland shows up with her long legs and no-bullshit attitude to audition for the prestigious all-male Rodner University snare line. It doesn’t matter how much hazing she has to endure from Laird Bronson, with his narrowed green eyes and arrogant smirk. She wants that damn spot, and she’s more than good enough to earn it. She expects there to be tension. Even friction. But not sparks hot enough to burn the entire campus down.

USA Today bestseller Stacy Kestwick is a Southern girl who firmly believes mornings should be outlawed. Her perfect day would include puppies, carbohydrates, and lounging on a hammock with a good book. No adulting, cleaning, or bacon allowed.

Narrator Bio

Tracy Marks has been acting onstage and onscreen since she was 12, and has been narrating audiobooks for 4 years. She lives in Chicago with her boyfriend and adorable dog, and considers herself very lucky to have an excuse to stay indoors in her toasty little booth during the cold winter months. Bringing heart, heat, vulnerability, and humor to her work, she has a passion for bringing love stories to life.

Stephen Dexter always wanted to be an audiobook narrator. As someone who never liked the whole "reading silently" thing, and has had a lifelong penchant for performing and flair for the dramatic, it was inevitable that he would be doing this for a living. With dozens of titles to his credit, a majority of them steamy romance novels, he has had the pleasure of voicing characters from the Great Plains of Texas, the bayous of Louisiana, the streets of South Boston, the dungeons of a vampire's castle, the deserts of Mars, and everything in between. It has been an honor to bring such amazing stories by Penny Reid (Marriage Of Inconvenience), Krista & Becca Ritchie (Hothouse Flower), Lex Martin (Shameless), Mia Sheridan (Kyland), and so many more incredibly talented authors, to life. 5 stars!
Oh my goodness, where was drumline captain Laird when I marched in the band? Back in the late 80s/early 90s, Drill Team was still all the rage in the south, but I don't recall any Lairds on our drumline. The members of the drumline were good friends of us short girls that stood next to them in formation on the field, and they even made hilarious shirts for us to wear, but none of them made my heart do what it did when I met Laird. Holy hotness. And Reese was so bad-ass! I absolutely adored her and the chemistry between these two was intense. I definitely need more Smith- was a perfect bestie! There was plenty of witty banter and hilarity mixed in to counterbalance the seriousness of several subjects. I found Drumline hard to put down, and I'll be checking out Stacy Kestwick's backlist because I just may have found a new favorite author.

I thought both narrators were fabulous. I listen to a few audiobooks a week, and this Drumline is one I will definitely listen to again. I thought Stephen Dexter did a great southern accent, and loved how Tracy Marks portrayed Reese. I read the book before listening to the audiobook, as I often do, and loved this book both as written work as well as in audio form.

I received this audiobook as part of my participation in a blog tour with Audiobookworm Promotions. The tour is being sponsored by Stacy Kestwick. The gifting of this audiobook did not affect my opinion of it.

With Stacy Kestwick
  1. Waffle fries or curly fries? Waffle fries, so you can really load up the condiments. Honey mustard is better than ketchup.
  2. GIF with a hard g or soft g? Hard, because some things are better hard. ;-)
  3. Fantasy or science-fiction? Science fiction. I’m a geek at heart.
  4. Superman or Batman? Well, there are some great Batman jokes in Drumline, but I personally like the idea of the guy-you-don’t-expect being the hero.
  5. Text message or call? Text! Unless it’s my mom, then calling is easier.
  6. Pancakes or waffles? Waffles! Even better? Cinnamon-roll waffles - just smoosh refrigerated cinnamon dough in the waffle maker, then top with the frosting.
  7. Doctor Who or the Walking Dead? Walking Dead - I’m a Georgia girl!
  8. TV Shows or movies? I rarely have time for either anymore, but I’ll go with TV shows. The twisted plotlines drag me in and the mini cliffhangers every week are a lesson in themselves in great writing.
  9. Facebook or Twitter? Facebook. I talk too much to limit myself to a certain number of characters.
  10. Alice in Wonderland or Robinson Crusoe? Alice. It just seems so trippy.
  11. Being too warm or too cold? I’m always cold. Give me too warm anyday just for a change.
  12. Netflix or Hulu? Hulu, so I can watch my favorite shows without commercials. I’m still mourning the cancellation of Pitch with Mark Paul Gosselar.
  13. Work Hard or Play Hard? Both. Also nap hard.
  14. Passenger or Driver? Passenger. So I can nap. Unless the driver is the only one who gets to control the radio. Then I want to drive.
  15. Amusement Park or Day at the Beach? Beach. Nothing beats laying in a hammock on a dock with a great book and a cold fruity drink. And napping in the sun. (Do you sense a theme yet?)
  16. Honesty or Other’s Feelings? Lord, I suck at tact, so I probably lean a little too far toward honesty.
  17. Movie at Home or Movie at the Theater? Depends what it is. Some movies are just better on the big screen. But at home, you don’t have to wear pants. Or a bra.
